About Me

My name is Tara Long Lawner. I live on the upper east side of New York City with my cat, Maxwell, and my husband, Lucky. Lucky is allergic to Max, but they get along very well, except when Max gleefully rubs himself all over David’s pillow.

I am a product manager at About.com, a large network of general interest websites led by expert guides. My background is in project management and web development, and I have experience in online market research, online trading, content management systems, and freelance web development.

I started this site one evening in 1996 when I was avoiding my senior thesis. I was in the computer lab at Mount Holyoke college, and I saw my classmate tiling these colorful images as a background on her web page. I loved it, although I didn’t yet understand the concept of personal web pages. She kindly showed me how to upload files and find background patterns, and I’ve been it doing it happily ever since.

TaraLand is where I practice writing and experiment with web development. There’s no single focus or topic I cover other than what interests me, but I hope that the quality of my writing will improve. I use Movable Type and PHP. Almost every page should validate as XHTML 1.0 Strict.
